Photo: Freedom Farmers' Market (2015)

By Adrionna Fike

Pictured here are Ms. Maddy's hands, revealing her pea shelling wisdom, in route to win Freedom Farmers’ Markets first annual black-eyed pea shelling contest. Mandela Foods Cooperative vends healthy locally made products at FFM on Saturdays and partners in marketing Freedom Farmers’ Market - a cooperative in its own right, bringing legacy foods from black farmers and other underserved farmers to Oakland. Over 50 people attended this fun loving multi-generational pea shelling competition. Ms. Maddy took home 5lbs of the esteemed purple hull peas grown on Scott Family Farms in Fresno, CA. as her prize.
